5 Questions on Forbes Naming SaskPower a Top 25 Employer in Canada

Forbes Award Featured
Forbes has ranked SaskPower 21st on their list of the Top 250 Employers in Canada. In light of this welcome announcement, we had a chance to sit down with Brian Ketcheson, Vice President, Human Resources, Safety and Stakeholder Relations, to ask about the award and why he thinks SaskPower was chosen.
  1. What does this award represent?

We're very proud of this award because it's a direct reflection of our corporate culture, in my belief, and not just who offers the "gold standard" of pay and benefits. The award was determined by asking employees what they thought of their workplace and whether they would recommend it as a place to work to friends and family.

  2. How does a company win this award?

Through an independent survey, Forbes asked 8,000 employees in Canada if they'd recommend their employer, or any other employers in their industry, to someone else. Employees were contacted anonymously and were representative of the Canadian workforce by gender, age, region, education, and ethnicity. From those responses, they were able to determine Canada's 250 best employers.

  3. Who else made the list?

The complete list was wide-ranging across industries, from big corporations to community-based financial institutions to universities and government agencies. BC Hydro, Google, and Costco were also included in the top 25, to name a few.

  4. How is this different from other top employer awards we've won?

With most other awards, companies have to apply for consideration in advance. With the Forbes award, this was not something we pursued at all. We were totally and pleasantly surprised to be included, not to mention among the top 25 in Canada!

  5. What are we doing to ensure we stay a top employer?

We never stop evaluating ourselves as an employer. We're always searching for new ways to improve our company's culture by listening to our employees. A strong commitment to work-life balance, professional development and an inclusive work environment are not just slogans, they're values that motivate us to do better every day.
