A new power generation project by TERIC Power Ltd. is now contributing 750 kilowatts (kW) of electricity to Saskatchewan's power grid as part of SaskPower's Flare Gas Power Generation Program.

"Our flare gas program presents an opportunity to help oil and gas producers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through converting waste flare gas into electricity for the people of Saskatchewan," said SaskPower Vice-President of Asset Management, Planning and Sustainability Tim Eckel. "I'd like to thank TERIC Power Ltd. and everyone else involved in this project for seeing the potential in this innovative new technology."

The project, which was developed by TERIC Power Ltd. in partnership with Kaybob Energy Corp., uses flare gas from oil wells owned by Sphere Energy Corp. It is located near Kerrobert and came online in August.

"A facility that generates a valuable electricity commodity from a previously wasted energy source creates a very welcome additional revenue stream for the producer," said TERIC Vice-President of Development Craig Barnes. "This project, hopefully the first of many for TERIC, is made possible by SaskPower's flare gas program. We would like to thank SaskPower for leading efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of the Saskatchewan electrical energy mix, whilst providing an economical program for oil and gas producers.

" SaskPower's Flare Gas Power Generation Program provides industry with an opportunity to use waste flare gas for power generation in alignment with Saskatchewan's regulatory requirements. This is the second project in the flare gas program. Kineticor's one megawatt project near Shaunavon came online in 2016. Every new project allows for further research and development into the emerging technology.

Flare gas power generation is a part of Saskatchewan's diverse generation mix. The development of cleaner electricity generation options is essential to power Saskatchewan's future. SaskPower will significantly increase the amount of renewable electricity in Saskatchewan's generation capacity mix — from 25% today to as much as 50% by 2030.
