Starting Monday, SaskPower crews will begin work to replace light standards on Main Street in downtown Moose Jaw.

“We know how important reliable streetlights are for local businesses, residents, and the entire community,” said SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh. “SaskPower has been working together with the City of Moose Jaw on this project for some time and I’m glad it’s now getting underway. Replacing these aging streetlights will mean a big improvement in terms of lighting quality and reliability in the downtown.”

SaskPower’s existing light standards have reached the end of their useful life. They will be replaced by 40 new steel standards fitted with LED fixtures. The construction project also involves maintaining underground cables that provide power to traffic lights and decorative street lights, which are owned by the City of Moose Jaw. SaskPower’s total investment on this project is estimated at $350,000.

Construction is expected to run from April 16 to June 29 and will be completed one block at a time on Main Street, weather permitting. Crews will start preliminary work on Monday, but the unusually cold spring could result in a slight delay if they encounter significant ground frost. If the schedule changes, we will post an update on SaskPower’s Twitter account. While we are taking steps to minimize the disruption and don’t expect any power outages, sidewalk access will be restricted and traffic will be down to one lane at the site of the work. Fencing will be in place to ensure safety around the construction site.

SaskPower looks forward to working together with the City of Moose Jaw as we invest more than $1 million on streetlights in the community over the next two years. Along with the work in the downtown, this investment includes LED conversions as part of SaskPower’s provincial LED rollout, as well as steps to improve general streetlight reliability across the city.
