We’re upgrading to LED streetlights. Since 2017, we’ve converted about 76,000 of the more than 100,000 streetlights we have in the province.
Why We’re Doing It
LED lighting uses less energy than High Pressure Sodium Vapour (HPSV) bulbs. This switch will also:
- increase the lifespan of a light
- lower maintenance cost
- reduce environmental impact
Since LED lights need less maintenance, we’ll have more time to work on:
- modernizing the grid
- providing reliable power to the province
Our Progress So Far
For 2023-24, we’re focusing on towns and villages throughout the province. We plan on changing 9,500 lights this year.
Minimizing the Impact to You
Rates won't go up because of the switch to LED bulbs. As more LED streetlights are installed over time municipalities may notice savings.
There may be minor traffic delays so we can finish the work. But no power outages will happen because of the updates, and we won't need access to your private property.
Respecting the Local Environment
Switching to LED bulbs will lower the light pollution in the sky. That’s because the LEDs are “dark-sky compliant”. This means they meet the guidelines set out by the International Dark-Sky Association.
We’ll also recycle or reuse the old fixtures we’re replacing. This prevents them from ending up in a landfill.
Benefits to Local Communities
Since LED bulbs have a longer lifespan, this will help reduce streetlight outages. Keeping the streets brighter and safer for the public.
We also picked LED bulbs that use warm-white colour light (3000K). This way we avoid the intense white-blue lights that negatively impact sleep patterns.
