Major Power Line Upgrade Underway in Saskatoon

August 25, 2021

Residents and commuters will soon notice construction activity underway in the Sutherland area of Saskatoon, as SaskPower begins construction on a major new transmission line.

The $18-million power line project will be built between the new Preston Crossing Substation and the W.J Bunn Substation, located on Attridge Drive near the entrance to the Forestry Farm.

“This new power line will not only allow SaskPower to serve the University of Saskatchewan better, but will also prepare SaskPower to support planned development of adjacent U of S lands in the future,” said Kory Hayko, SaskPower Vice-President of Transmission and Industrial Services.

The line will cross Circle Drive and run along Attridge Drive, making use of an existing right-of-way. One section of the line will use structures that hold two power lines, allowing both SaskPower and Saskatoon Light and Power to use the corridor. Customers within the Sutherland and Silverspring neighbourhoods are served by Saskatoon Light and Power.

A crew will begin installing foundations for the new transmission line structures this week. Throughout construction, residents, businesses and commuters may notice noise, dust or traffic delays and traffic flow restrictions. Work zones will vary week by week, and the latest traffic impacts will be posted on the City of Saskatoon’s website.

The project will be complete in early 2022. Please visit saskpower.com/sutherland for more information.
