We’re pleased to announce that the new Great Plains Power Station near Moose Jaw is fully operational!

Great Plains becomes the newest natural gas power station to be added to our system. It’s a combined cycle gas turbine facility with a generating capacity of 370 megawatts (MW). That’s equal to the amount needed to power up to 370,000 homes. With Great Plains added to our system, natural gas generation now represents 41% of our power supply mix.

The Role of Natural Gas Generation

We remain focused on our mission to provide reliable, sustainable and cost-effective power to our customers and the communities we serve. We’re also committed to achieving a net-zero GHG emissions power system by 2050 and we’re on track to do so.

Natural gas facilities like Great Plains Power Station play a crucial role in that transition. That’s because natural gas is currently the only reliable 24/7 power supply available to us at the scale we need to meet the demands of our growing economy.

Great Plains Project Highlights

• The facility was built over 45 months, from March 2021 to December 2024.
• At peak construction in July 2023, more than 600 workers were on site each day.
• Over 70% of workers were from Saskatchewan, including 13% from Moose Jaw.
• Employees, contractors and suppliers contributed a combined total of more than 2.9 million labour hours.
• Great Plains will be operated by 25 full-time employees.
• More than 300 Saskatchewan businesses participated in construction. We awarded a total of $267 million in contracts to local companies.
• We achieved more than 4 times the level of Indigenous participation than with Chinook Power Station. The total value of Indigenous contracts was just under $49 million.
