Independent power producers (IPPs) play an important role in adding extra power capacity to our grid. This ensures reliable and affordable power for homes, businesses and communities across the province.
Here’s how IPPs operate in Saskatchewan:
Selling Power to SaskPower
IPPs sell power to us through long-term agreements. Under these agreements, the IPP builds, owns, operates and maintains a power facility, and we purchase the power produced. This is typical of most of the wind and solar projects in Saskatchewan.
Most IPPs are selected through a competitive procurement process. Through this process, we invite proposals for specific projects and evaluate them based on defined requirements. We select the successful IPP to enter into an agreement with us to supply power over a set term.

Selling Through Renewable Access Service
IPPs can also sell power through our Renewable Access Service (RAS).
This program allows large commercial and industrial customers to achieve their Environmental, Social and Governance targets by buying power from an IPP of their choice, while using our transmission system.
