BD3 Status Update: Q2 2026
July 17, 2026
During the second quarter of 2026 (April 1 – June 30), the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility at Boundary Dam Power Station was available 67.16% of the time, capturing 113,054 tonnes of CO2. While online, the facility had a daily average capture rate of 2,186 tonnes in Q2, with a peak one-day capture of 2,604 tonnes. This resulted in an emissions intensity of 405 tonnes of carbon dioxide per gigawatt hour.
The lower output for this quarter was a result of the planned annual maintenance outage of BD3/CCS that began in late May. This overhaul included work such as:
- Packing changes in the SO2 and CO2 absorber towers;
- Chemical cleans;
- Desiccant replacement for the CO2 dehydrator units;
- Inspections and repairs of the CCS cooling tower; and
- Other general maintenance and repair activities.
The CCS facility and BD3 have returned to service and resumed carbon capture.
