We’re upgrading a power line that serves the Air Ronge, Lac La Ronge I.R. and La Ronge areas.

The new line will be about 73 kilometres (km) long. It’ll run alongside Highway 2 from Air Ronge south to the junction with Tracey Road.

Project Stage: Build and Energize

Why We're Doing It

The current power line is near the end of its life. Rebuilding it will help ensure reliable power for those in the area for years to come. And upgrading the line’s capacity from 72 kilovolts (kV) to 138 kV will support future power demand.

Part of the line from the junction of Highway 2 and Tracey Road south to the Timber Cove Substation was previously rebuilt and upgraded. This project will complete the upgrade for the rest of the line.

Our Progress So Far

After our initial assessment we worked with stakeholders and Rightsholders in the area to develop a new line route. We took feedback on:

  • General knowledge of the area, including environmental and heritage resources.
  • Concerns about the project, and how we can reduce impacts.

Right now, we’re building the new line. We plan to complete our work in 2 sections:

Section 1: Tracey Road to Highway Creek

  • This section of the project involves building approximately 36 km of new power line adjacent to the existing transmission line.
  • Once built and energized, we’ll salvage the old line.
  • We expect to complete this section by Fall 2025
  • The existing power line will be removed by March 2026.

Section 2: Highway Creek to La Ronge Substation

  • This section of the project involves building approximately 37 km of  new power line adjacent to the existing transmission line.
  • Once built and energized, we’ll salvage the old line.
  • Construction is expected to start in the Fall of 2025 and be complete by Fall 2026.
  • The existing power line will be removed by September 2027.

Respecting the Local Environment

What we do today impacts our future. We’re always looking for ways to reduce our impact and protect the environment.

As we plan projects, we use tools like databases, satellite imagery and field surveys to understand the environment we are working in.

As projects move forward, we’ll make sure environmental protection standards are in place to reduce our impact on features like:

  • Waterbodies
  • Sensitive lands
  • Wildlife and their habitats
  • Heritage resources

We also work with the Ministry of Environment and other regulatory agencies to ensure we meet all environmental requirements.

Project Outcomes

When complete, this investment will improve power reliability for homes and businesses. It’ll also support future power demand in the area.
