Hero Flare Gas

It’s not uncommon to see flare stacks while driving down Saskatchewan’s highways or grid roads. The flares are used by oil and gas production sites to dispose of flammable gases.

Flare Gas

Flare gas creates power by burning in a gas engine or turbine.

Medium reliability

Flare gas is a fairly dependable power source.

Medium cost rating

It’s a cost-effective way to power our province.

Low environmental impact

Flare gas has a low impact on the environment.

We’re currently buying 1.75 MW of flare gas generation through the Flare Gas Power Generation Program.

We’ll be buying power from 19 MW of flare gas generation developed through our Power Generation Partner Program.

We also allocated 20 MW of flare gas generation to the First Nations Power Authority (FNPA). Flying Dust First Nation, in partnership with Genalta Power, is developing a 15 MW facility under the FNPA set aside and is working on the other 5 MW for a future project. We’ll purchase all the power from both facilities.
