SaskPower Investing $8.5 Million to Increase Grid Reliability in Regina’s Central Business District

May 09, 2022

As the 2022 construction season sets in, SaskPower is investing approximately $8.5 million towards increasing system reliability in Regina’s central business district for 2022. Construction began in April and is expected to wrap up this October.

“SaskPower’s goal with this investment is to both increase grid capacity and improve reliability, primarily in downtown Regina,” said Shawn Schmidt, Vice President of Customer Services and Distribution at SaskPower. “Another benefit of this work is that it will help give SaskPower crews greater visibility of the grid to ultimately help find and address future outages using smart technology.”

Since 2012, SaskPower has invested over $52 million towards improving electrical system reliability in downtown Regina. This year’s priority is to replace equipment at or near the end of its operational life, including underground cables, switches, and duct banks. Some of this work will require short, planned outages and traffic restrictions.

SaskPower aims to keep customer impacts to a minimum, and any necessary power outages or traffic restrictions will be communicated to the public in advance. The most up-to-date planned outage information can be found at saskpower.com/outages, through the MySaskPower portal, or on the SaskPower app.
